Biography

Bob brings more than fifty years of experience as a director, actor, administrator and teacher of theatre to his Guest Artist assignment as director of Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure. His most recent Civic productions include Sherlock Holmes: the Final Adventure, Voice of Good Hope, On Golden Pond, Cinderella, and Elizabeth Rex. Since 2008, he has also directed Marvin's Room at Farmers Alley and The Playboy of the Western World for The Whole Art Theatre, and has acted in Escanaba in Love at Farmers Alley and West Side Story at WMU. A director of more than 150 productions and an actor in nearly 200, he taught at Western Michigan for thirty-four years and has been associated with the Civic since 1966, including a term as President of the Board. His spouse, Dr. Carol Payne Smith, and their three sons, Jeffrey, Christopher and Timothy have all "trod the Civic boards." Bob and Carol are proud grandparents of eight and the doting great grandparents of a thirteen month old girl! Dr. Smith was honored in 2008 with the Civics' Larkin H. Noble Award for lifetime achievement and in 1999 was awarded the Medal of Arts by the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo for his cultural contributions to the community. Bob is a proud union member of Actors' Equity Association and the Stage Directors and Choreographers.
