Play with Music

A joyous celebration of African American women and their church hats, this endearing new play with music is a soul-stirring tribute to the unique cultural phenomenon that fuses faith with fashion. There is a hat for every occasion, from flirting to churchgoing to funerals to baptisms. Yolanda, a young girl from Brooklyn, is sent down south to stay with her grandmother after her brother is shot and killed. As she watches her grandmother and her grandmother's friends preparing for and going to Sunday church service, she begins to discover connections to older traditions and a deeper spirituality. You won't want to miss this Off-Broadway sensation; it's brimming with "hattitude," riveting stories, dance, jazz, blues and glorious gospel music.
